Severe pollution, Ministry of Environmental Protection lights red light on diesel vehicles

The annual report shows that China has become a major country on the international motor vehicle production and sales list for six consecutive years. Motor vehicle pollution has become a major source of air pollution in China and a major cause of haze and photochemical smog pollution. The urgency of preventing and controlling motor vehicle pollution is becoming increasingly prominent.
Wang Jian, Deputy Director of the Pollution Prevention and Control Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, introduced that the number of motor vehicles in China continues to grow. In 2014, the national production and sales of sedans reached 23.723 million and 23.492 million respectively. Compared with 1980, the number of motor vehicles in China has increased 33 times, reaching 245.772 million, an increase of 14.14 million compared to 2013; Among them, there are 144.522 million sedans, 9.72 million low-speed sedans, and 91.53 million motorcycles.
With the rapid increase in the number of motor vehicles, the air in Chinese cities has begun to show the characteristics of combined pollution of coal smoke and motor vehicle exhaust, which directly affects people's health. In 2014, motor vehicles in China emitted 45.473 million tons of pollutants, a decrease of 0.5% compared to 45.709 million tons in 2013. Cars are a major contributor to the total amount of pollutants, emitting over 90% of NOx (nitrogen oxides) and PM (particulate matter), and over 80% of HC and CO.
The annual report shows that according to emission standards, cars that meet National IV and above standards account for 22.7% of the total number of cars, an increase of 6.7% compared to the 16% share in 2013; 52.5% of cars meet the National III standard, 10.4% meet the National II standard, 10.6% meet the National I standard, and the remaining 3.8% of cars do not meet the National I standard. Classified by environmental symbols, "green label vehicles" account for 93.2%, while high emission "yellow label vehicles" still account for 6.8%.
It is worth mentioning that the four major pollutants emitted by pre China I regulated cars, which account for 3.8% of the total car ownership, account for over 30.0% of the total emissions; However, the emissions of China III and above regulated cars, which account for 75.2% of the total ownership, are less than 40.0% of the total emissions. Classified by environmental symbols, the "yellow label cars" that account for only 6.8% of car ownership emit 45.4% of NOx, 74.6% of PM, 47.4% of CO, and 49.1% of HC.
From this perspective, accelerating the screening of old motor vehicles and yellow label vehicles, as well as accelerating the implementation of National V standards, will be the next operational site for achieving energy conservation and emission reduction.
